Charles J. Kirk — founder of Turning Point USA, conservative activist, and nationally prominent political commentator — was shot and killed at 12:23 PM on September 10, 2025, while hosting a public outdoor event on the campus of Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. The event was the first in a planned series of college campus appearances nationwide.
Kirk was seated under a portable canopy behind a table and microphone, fielding questions from audience members. Several hundred people were in attendance. Approximately fifteen minutes into the event, Kirk was answering a question about mass shootings by transgender individuals when a single gunshot rang out. The bullet struck him in the neck. He slumped to the ground almost immediately. He was rushed to Timpanogos Regional Hospital in Orem, where he was pronounced deceased.
Tyler James Robinson was 22 years old at the time of the shooting. He grew up in Washington, Utah, where he was known as an exceptional student — a 4.0 GPA, 99th-percentile national standardized test scores, and a four-year presidential merit scholarship worth approximately $32,000 to attend Utah State University as a pre-engineering major. He left after one semester in late 2021.
After withdrawing from Utah State, Robinson returned to Southern Utah and enrolled in an electrical apprenticeship program at Dixie Technical College, where he was in his third year at the time of the shooting. Neighbors at his St. George apartment complex described him as intensely reclusive. According to Utah Governor Spencer Cox, Robinson became heavily radicalized online following his departure from college — immersed in online culture, video games, and internet communities.
Robinson's mother told investigators that over the preceding year Robinson had become more political, leaning left — becoming pro-gay and trans-rights oriented. He had begun dating his roommate, Lance Twiggs, a biological male who was transitioning genders. This created friction within the family, particularly between Robinson and his father — whom Robinson described in his text messages as "pretty diehard MAGA" since Trump took office. Robinson was a registered unaffiliated voter with no formal party affiliation.
Robinson arrived on the UVU campus in a grey Dodge Challenger at approximately 8:29 AM — nearly four hours before the shooting — wearing a maroon t-shirt, light colored shorts, a black hat, and light shoes. He changed outfits before the attack. By 11:50 AM, surveillance cameras captured him moving across campus in dark clothing: a black long-sleeve shirt bearing an American flag and eagle, dark jeans, a dark baseball cap, large sunglasses, and white/gray Chuck Taylor-style shoes. He carried a dark backpack.
Robinson walked with a distinctive stiff gait — very little bending in his right leg — consistent, per investigators, with a rifle concealed in his pants. At 12:02 PM he was recorded on the north side of the Losee Center building. At 12:15 PM he entered the Losee Center. At 12:17 PM surveillance captured him climbing over a short concrete wall and dropping onto the rooftop — crouching on the north side. At 12:22 PM he stood and sprinted to the west edge of the roof, scooting into a prone position facing the courtyard below — a clear 160-yard shooting corridor directly to Kirk's seat.
"Approximately fifteen minutes into the event, Mr. Kirk was answering a question about mass shootings by transgender individuals when a gunshot rang out. The bullet struck Mr. Kirk in the neck. He slumped to the ground almost immediately."
At 12:23 PM the shot was fired. Surveillance shows Robinson stood up suddenly from the prone position and sprinted north across the roof. He placed the rifle at the northeast corner, lowered himself down, dropped to the grass below, picked up the rifle, and ran north across Campus Drive. He discarded the weapon — a Mauser Model 98 .30-06 bolt-action rifle wrapped in a dark towel — in a wooded area at the northeast edge of campus, then changed his clothing and fled in his Dodge Challenger.
The rifle contained one spent round and three unspent rounds. Robinson had hand-etched inscriptions onto each cartridge — internet memes and left-wing cultural references. A shoe impression consistent with Chuck Taylor/Converse soles was found at the northeast corner of the roof. DNA consistent with Robinson was recovered from the rifle's trigger, the fired cartridge casing, two unfired cartridges, and the towel.
Before Robinson had even left Orem, he texted his roommate Lance Twiggs, directing him to look under the keyboard in their apartment — where Robinson had left a handwritten note reading: "I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I'm going to take it."
What followed was a text exchange that prosecutors describe as among the most detailed and explicit documented confessions in a political violence case. The messages were provided voluntarily to investigators by Twiggs, who showed them to police on his Discord app. Screenshots were introduced as evidence in the charging documents. The full text — preserved verbatim in the indictment — is reproduced below from official court records.
Twiggs: "What?????????????? You're joking, right????"
Robinson: "I am still ok my love, but am stuck in orem for a little while longer yet. Shouldn't be long until I can come home, but I gotta grab my rifle still. To be honest I had hoped to keep this secret till I died of old age. I am sorry to involve you."
Twiggs: "you weren't the one who did it right????"
Robinson: "I am, I'm sorry"
Twiggs: "I thought they caught the person?"
Robinson: "no, they grabbed some crazy old dude, then interrogated someone in similar clothing."
Twiggs: "Why?"
Robinson: "Why did I do it?"
Twiggs: "Yeah"
Robinson: "I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can't be negotiated out."
Twiggs: "How long have you been planning this?"
Robinson: "a bit over a week I believe."
Robinson: "remember how I was engraving bullets? The f---in messages are mostly a big meme, if I see 'notices bulge uwu' on fox new I might have a stroke"
Robinson: "judging from today I'd say grandpas gun does just fine idk. I think that was a $2k scope ;-;"
Robinson: "delete this exchange"
Robinson: "since trump got into office [my dad] has been pretty diehard maga."
Robinson: "Im gonna turn myself in willingly, one of my neighbors here is a deputy for the sheriff."
Robinson: "you are all I worry about love"
Robinson: "don't talk to the media please. don't take any interviews or make any comments. … if any police ask you questions ask for a lawyer and stay silent"
Lance Twiggs was Robinson's roommate and romantic partner at their St. George, Utah apartment. It was Twiggs who found the pre-written note under the keyboard — "I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I'm going to take it" — and it was Twiggs who received the text confession in real time while Robinson was still in Orem attempting to retrieve the rifle.
Twiggs voluntarily opened his Discord app and showed investigators the messages, allowing them to photograph each screen. He cooperated from the outset. Due to the scale of public attention and online harassment directed at him, law enforcement placed Twiggs in a secure, undisclosed location for his protection.
Court filings from June 2026 confirm that Twiggs has been granted use-immunity — meaning testimony he provides cannot be used against him — in exchange for a formal sworn recorded statement. Twiggs is a central prosecution witness. Robinson's Counts 5 and 6 (Witness Tampering) are based on his instructions to Twiggs to delete the exchange and stay silent with police.
The man detained at the scene was identified as 71-year-old George Zinn — a local disruptor with mental health issues who intentionally yelled to police that he was the shooter to create chaos and help the actual suspect flee. He was cleared, charged with obstruction of justice, and sentenced. Robinson himself referenced Zinn in his text to Twiggs: "no, they grabbed some crazy old dude." DNA, surveillance footage, shoe impressions, and the family rifle establish Robinson as the sole shooter.
An ATF ballistics report returned an "inconclusive" result on the fatal bullet. Law enforcement and forensic experts explained that the bullet struck Kirk's cervical vertebra and shattered on impact — only fragments were recovered, making a definitive microscopic match impossible. However: the spent shell casing found at the scene matches the rifle. Robinson's DNA is on the trigger, the casing, two unfired cartridges, and the towel. Surveillance places Robinson in the prone sniper position at the precise moment of the shot. No second shooter evidence exists in the official record.
Both the FBI and local prosecutors have confirmed Robinson acted entirely as a lone wolf. Forensic financial audits found zero unusual bank transfers, cryptocurrency transactions, or hidden assets linking Robinson to any domestic or foreign handler. The rifle was a family gift — not supplied by an operative. The claim that Israel or Iran directed the killing was identified by CNN and cyber-intelligence researchers as an active disinformation campaign pushed by Iran-linked influence operations. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu publicly called the theory "insane," "false," and "outrageous."
The charging information includes a Victim Targeting Enhancement on Counts 1, 2, and 7 — alleging that Robinson selected Charlie Kirk as his target because of Kirk's political expression, specifically his commentary and public advocacy regarding transgender individuals and mass shootings. The enhancement is codified in the criminal information filed September 16, 2025, and is one of the first applications of this statute to a high-profile political assassination in Utah state history.
