An 11-day siege at the Weaver family cabin in Idaho, resulting in the deaths of a U.S. Marshal, the Weaver family dog, Sammy Weaver, and Vicki Weaver.

The Ruby Ridge standoff began on August 21, 1992, when U.S. Marshals conducting surveillance on Randy Weaver — a white separatist who had failed to appear in court on a weapons charge — encountered Weaver, his son Sammy, and a friend. A shootout ensued, killing Deputy U.S. Marshal William Degan, the Weaver family dog, and 14-year-old Sammy Weaver. The FBI's Hostage Rescue Team deployed to the scene, and during the siege, an FBI sniper shot and killed Vicki Weaver as she stood in the cabin doorway holding her infant child. The incident became a flashpoint in anti-government sentiment and led to significant reforms in FBI rules of engagement. The federal government later paid the Weaver family $3.1 million in a wrongful death settlement.
