On January 6, 2021, following a 'Stop the Steal' rally near the White House where then-President Donald Trump addressed supporters, a mob breached the U.S. Capitol building as Congress was certifying the Electoral College results of the 2020 presidential election. Approximately 2,000 rioters stormed the building, smashing windows, vandalizing offices, and forcing lawmakers into hiding. Five people died in connection with the attack, and over 140 police officers were injured. The Department of Justice launched the largest investigation in its history, resulting in over 1,200 criminal charges as of 2024. The House January 6th Committee investigated the attack, holding public hearings in 2022. The event marked the first time the Capitol was breached since the War of 1812. Timeline of Events
Morning Rally: President Trump addressed the "Save America" rally near the White House, urging supporters to march to the Capitol.
2:12 PM EST: The first breach of the building occurred as rioters smashed windows near the Senate wing.
2:26 PM EST: Vice President Mike Pence was hurriedly evacuated to safety by the Secret Service.
2:44 PM EST: Ashli Babbitt was fatally shot by Capitol Police while trying to breach a barricaded door leading to the House Speaker's lobby.
4:17 PM EST: President Trump released a pre-recorded video on X, telling rioters to go home but stating "we love you".
8:00 PM EST: Lawmakers reconvened after law enforcement cleared the building, ultimately certifying Joe Biden's victory by 3:39 AM.
Key Figures & Groups
Capitol Police & MPD: 140 law enforcement officers sustained injuries, including chemical burns, broken bones, and traumatic brain injuries. Officer Eugene Goodman was credited with diverting rioters away from the Senate chamber to allow senators to escape.
Extremist Organizations: Members of far-right groups, including the Oath Keepers and the Proud Boys, pre-planned their involvement and led the initial breach.
Vandalism: Rioters occupied the offices of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, stole federal property, and smeared feces in the hallways of the Capitol. EDITOR'S NOTE:

DURING MY INVESTIGATION I COMPARED THIS EVENT TO EVERY EVENT INVOLVING POLITICAL VIOLENCE, PROTEST MOVEMENT, CIVIL UNREST, COURT/LEGAL AFTERMATH RIOT, GOVERNMENT STANDOFF, MANY RESULTING IN MASS CASUALTIES AND HAVE NOT FOUND ONE SITUATION WITH THIS NUMBER OF POLICE OFFICER SUICIDES AFTER THE FACT AS THEY ARE HERE IN THIS INVESTIGATION. I HAVE RESEARCHED AND THE FOLLOWING ARE BELEIVED TO BE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS:

On January 6, that completely collapsed.
The Silence: For hours, frontline officers were screaming into their radios for backup, only to be met with silence from high-ranking officials.
The Knowledge Burden: Officers on the ground knew the Capitol was being breached long before the Pentagon or the Capitol Police leadership authorized the National Guard to deploy. Standing in a corridor fighting for your life while knowing that the highest levels of government are delaying your rescue creates an intense, isolating psychological burden.

Radical Discrepancies in Intelligence
Frontline officers were sent to work that morning with standard equipment, having been told by leadership that the day would consist of routine, peaceful political rallies.
The Hidden Truth: Later investigations and leaked internal memos revealed that high-ranking intelligence officials did have specific warnings that groups were planning to storm the building and bring weapons.
The Aftermath: The officers who survived had to live with the realization that their own leadership possessed intelligence that could have protected them, but failed to pass it down the chain. Realizing you were inadvertently used as an unprepared shield by high-ranking officials leads to severe institutional trauma.

Immediate Pressure to Keep Quiet
In the days immediately following the riot, the political stakes were incredibly high, and a massive scramble began among various government agencies to shift blame.
The Gag Orders: Multiple officers reported that they were quietly pressured by internal affairs, supervisors, or federal investigators to keep their mouths shut, limit what they told the media, and avoid sharing the full extent of the security failures they witnessed.
The "Secret" Communications: Officers were privy to the chaotic, panic-stricken radio transmissions and internal text messages of high-ranking politicians and security officials trying to secure their own safety. Carrying the weight of what powerful people said and did behind closed doors during a national crisis is a massive, stressful burden for an everyday officer to hold.

The Fear of Internal Collusion
One of the most corrosive elements for the officers' mental health was the suspicion of insider threats.
What They Saw: Frontline officers reported seeing off-duty police officers from other jurisdictions, and even military veterans, active in the crowd using tactical hand signals against them.
The Paranoia: In the weeks that followed, several Capitol Police officers were suspended or investigated for allegedly taking selfies with rioters or directing them. For the dedicated officers, returning to work every day alongside colleagues they could no longer fully trust created a toxic, paranoid environment where they felt they couldn't even confide in their own peers.
