On May 25, 2020, Derek Chauvin, a white Minneapolis police officer, murdered George Floyd, a Black man, by kneeling on his neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. A bystander's video went viral. Within days, protests erupted in all 50 states and over 60 countries, making it the largest protest movement in American history. An estimated 15–26 million people participated. While the majority of protests were peaceful, arson, looting, and vandalism occurred in major cities, and National Guard units were deployed in over 30 states. In Minneapolis alone, over 1,500 buildings were damaged. The movement led to a global reckoning on racial justice, policing reform, and the removal of Confederate monuments.
