On April 17, 2024, students at Columbia University established a 'Gaza Solidarity Encampment' on the campus lawn, demanding the university divest from companies linked to Israel and calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza war. When university leadership called in the New York Police Department on April 18, the encampment was cleared and over 100 students were arrested. The crackdown inspired similar encampments at over 100 colleges and universities nationwide, with thousands of arrests. The protests led to faculty votes of no confidence at several institutions, student suspensions, and congressional hearings on campus antisemitism. The movement became a defining flashpoint in debates over free speech, academic freedom, and U.S. foreign policy.
